How to Find IP Address

Today I want to talk to you about the IP address, that is, that numeric or alphanumeric address that identifies modems, computers, smartphones, and all devices connected to the Internet, so that they can communicate with each other and with the network. IP addresses can be dynamic (that is, they change with each connection), or static(that is, fixed). A distinction must also be made between public IP addresses, which identify devices on the Internet, and local IP addresses, which are instead assigned by routers to identify the various devices within the home or office network.

Knowing the IP address can be useful for setting up firewalls, remote control software, and many other circumstances. That’s why, with my guide, I want to show you how to find IP addresses on the most popular operating systems, as well as tell you how to identify that of a specific device in the network.

No, you don’t have to worry. Although it may seem the opposite, finding this information is actually a very simple thing. Read on, put my tips into practice and you will realize them!

How to find the public IP address (dynamic and static)

Want to know how to find a device’s public IP address on the Internet? In this case, what I recommend you do is to carefully read the chapters that will follow and put into practice what is written in them.

Find your IP address

Believe it or not, to find the public IP address of your connection, that is, the modem that distributes the connection to all the devices connected to your home (or office) network, all you have to do is open the browser and connect to a dedicated online service that allows you to have detailed information about your IP, the ISP to which it belongs (i.e. the operator providing the internet connection) and also the location where the telephone control unit that is part of your connection is located.

Among the many services of this genre, you can try My IP. Once connected to the latter, scroll down the page and you will find a tile with the identification of your IP address, under the heading Your IP address is.

In addition, you will also be shown other useful information. For example, find the Provider entry that lets you know the name of the carrier that provides you with internet access. In addition, under the city and country entries, you will be indicated the location where the control unit that your Internet connection is located.

This service allows you to find your IP address from both computers and mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones. On mobile phones and tablets it also manages to identify the public IP address of connections under mobile networks (3G/4G/5G). No additional steps should be taken.

How to find a person’s IP address

Want to find another person’s public IP address? Maybe a nuisance who sends you unwanted emails? In that case, you can use the features attached to the web program/service for the email you use.

In fact, you can extrapolate the IP address of the sender of an email by consulting the header of the messages received.

The header, if you did not know, is a report in which there are all the technical details of the emails received. To find the sender’s IP of an email, you must then open the message and proceed based on the web service or program you use to manage your email. Here are some practical examples.

  • If you’re using Gmail, click the ⋮ icon at the top right (in the message pane), and select the Original Show item from the menu that opens.
  • If you use Outlook.com, open the received message, click the (…) icon, and select the View items in the pane that opens > View Message Source.
  • If you’re using Microsoft Outlook, double-click the message you received, and then press the top-level > Properties; In the Internet Header section, you’ll find the message header.
  • If you are using Mozilla Thunderbird, select the Source item of the message from the View menu.
  • If you’re using macOS Mail, select the email you’re interested in, select the View item from the menu bar, point to Message, and choose the Source Format item.

The sender’s IP address is what you find at the received: from the string of the report. I would point out, however, that unfortunately this system does not always work: in general, the IP is replaced by that of the servers of the mail service and therefore no longer corresponds to the real one.

Anyway, in case you want to delve deeper into this topic, I recommend reading my guide on how to find a person’s IP address.

After you sign in, you need to reach the sign-in section that summarizes all devices connected to the network. Unfortunately, the modem/router interface is not the same among all network devices of this type.

Therefore, in light of this, in the next lines I will indicate the procedure that you can perform on an ASUS router, but you can take as an example the latter to be able to find on your router the exact section to which I will refer.

When logged in, select the Network Map item,in the left menu, and click the View List button, located in the center of the screen.
